Bioquímico estadounidense. Obtuvo un Ph.D. en la Universidad de Michigan. Demostró que cada tripleta posible (codón) de las cuatro clases de bases nitrogenadas presentes en el ADN y (en algunos virus) en el ARN (con tres excepciones) produce, en último término, la incorporación de un aminoácido específico en una proteína celular. En 1968 compartió el Premio Nobel con Robert William Holley y Har Gobind Khorana, cuyas investigaciones, como las de Nirenberg, contribuyeron a mostrar cómo las instrucciones genéticas del núcleo celular controlan la composición de las proteínas.
